In Israel this "operation" is mostly done by people with NO medical qualifications. More than often resulting in infection to the baby, and in rare cases death. All to a God for whom there is no evidence of existence.

Male circumcision (and i write this as one who has it, being a Jew) is a brutal act on a defenceless baby of eight days. It is supposed to binned the child to God, and confirm the child as Jewish. In truth it stems from infanticide. Yes Abraham took his son up the mountain to kill him as a sacrifice to God. One can surmise that, as this became intolerable at some stage the cutting of the foreskin was used as a replacement.

It's not that secularists can't commit atrocities, they can as individuals, it's just that they are not driven by dogma and coordinated tribal xenophobia as a group. Atheism is akin to not collecting stamps; those who don't collect stamps don't go about seeking each other out and forming clubs of common thought.

@bigglyguy It absolutely is. I wasn't trying to defend male genital mutilation and I hope that wasn't how my message came across. I was just trying to point out why Dawkins may have chosen fgm as an example over mgm.By the way, I was once told that the clitoris alone contains more nerv endings that the entire penis altogether. Tough I must say my knowledge on that subject is limited and my sources of information doubtable at best. So I won't try to argue.

@rasmusacdk "Only"? the foreskin contains the vast majority of male sexual nerves, covering a relatively numb glans, it's the total opposite of the clitoris which is a relatively numb hood over a sensitive glans. Many FGMs do NOT involve anything other than clipping the clitoral hood, up in stages to the brutality you mention. However it's irrelevant, for *I* am offended at ANY unneeded cutting, incising, amputation or other physical harm to children's genitals, of either sex. Is it not obvious? |
